Celebrating Black History Month!
|
| |
|
Dear Friends of Breastfeed Durham,
February has always been a complicated and powerful month.
As a child, Black History Month was one of the few times each year when we were invited to imagine something different—that people with curly hair and browner skin could change the world. This time of year gave us a little more room to dream, to imagine new ways we could build something better, even when we didn’t yet see ourselves reflected everywhere.
Every day, we feel how personal this work is for the families we serve—and how collective it must be if we are truly going to change outcomes for families in Durham.
This winter has reminded us just how fragile and interconnected we are. After snow and ice forced us to cancel our Cajun Brunch fundraiser, many of us are still navigating one of the coldest, hardest winters we’ve experienced in a long time. In moments like this, our values become very clear.
Right now, Breastfeed Durham is focusing on care that meets people exactly where they are. We are assembling and distributing safe infant feeding kits in our community as part of a special project led by our Executive Director, Bernadette Greene. This work is grounded in lived experience, trust, and deep knowledge of the neighborhoods we serve. It’s quiet, practical care—and it’s exactly what this moment calls for.
Black history is not only something we remember; it’s something we practice. We make history every day—in acts of care, in community, and in continuing to imagine a world where every parent and every baby is supported.
Thank you for being part of this work with us—this month, and always.
With gratitude, Breastfeed Durham |

Chocolate Milk Documentary |

This film is an exploration of the racial divide in breastfeeding. Told through the narratives of three African American women: a new mother, a midwife and a WIC lactation educator, the film seeks to answer the longstanding question of why more African American women are not breastfeeding. |

DC Breastfeeding Coalition: Defining Cultural Competency |
|
This webinar presentation explores the visible and non-visible aspects of culture, how cultural factors influence breastfeeding in the African-American community, and how to expand and sustain the reach of a breastfeeding coalition. Serving a community of predominantly low-income families of color, with a lack of breastfeeding knowledge and limited support, the DC Breastfeeding Coalition is known for its ability to leverage funds to advance community breastfeeding goals. |

Big Ship Turning: Changing the Culture of Feeding Black Babies |
|
This session highlights the impact of creating a continuity of care model that extends from pregnancy throughout the postpartum period to support Black families in their decision to breastfeed. While experts recognize that breastfeeding is overwhelmingly beneficial for babies, there are large differences in breastfeeding rates for African American women. Many do not have access to information, awareness of health benefits, or lack social support around sustaining breastfeeding through infancy and beyond. Establishing a program to support families in-home not only reduces barriers to receiving care externally but has been successful in sustaining breastfeeding duration rates. |

Cajun Sunday Brunch Fundraiser at Succotash
|
| |
|
Get ready to celebrate community, culture, and connection!
Join us for a one-of-a-kind Cajun Brunch at Succotash in Durham on Sunday, March 8, 2026, with live music from 1:00–3:00 PM. This event blends Louisiana flavor, live music, and local love in support of Breastfeed Durham. Breastfeed Durham envisions a world where every family has the freedom to define their own infant feeding journey—and receives the support needed to reach their goals. We honor all methods of providing human milk: breastfeeding, chestfeeding, bottle-feeding, donor milk, and feeding through medical devices. While our work centers human milkfeeding, we also provide culturally respectful support for families who use formula, understanding that informed choice and systemic barriers must be acknowledged together.
Music & Meaning: Members of the local band, OYAYAs, will bring authentic Cajun music to the event! 100% of your donation will go directly to support Breastfeed Durham’s ongoing work supporting families, lactation spaces, and community care.
How It Works: Succotash will open their event space for this special afternoon, featuring order-off-the-menu dining and drinks. You can reserve a seat at the community tables in the back dining room to enjoy the live band and festivities. Be sure to specify that you’d like to sit in the back.
Dining Room: Consider coming as early as 12:30pm or as late as 2:30pm! Their online system is set up to take reservations at 15-minute intervals up to 2:30pm. The musicians will play from 1pm to 3pm with a short set break at 1:45pm.
Giving: At the center of each community table, you’ll find a QR code linking to our donation page. We greatly appreciate your donations in support of our mission. All proceeds go toward programs that make our community more welcoming and family-friendly.
Save the date, invite your friends, and join us for great food, great company, and a great cause! Don’t forget to reserve your seats well in advance! |
