Hi friends,
Early voting starts this Thursday, October 15. When you get your ballot, read all the way to the back. Some of the most important questions for Durham families are there.
Three changes to the North Carolina Constitution are on every ballot:
- Property tax limits. Requires the General Assembly to set limits on how much local governments can raise property taxes. The legislature would write the actual limits later.
- Income tax cap. Lowers the highest state income tax rate the constitution allows, from 7% to 3.5%.
- Photo ID for all voters. Requires photo ID for every way of voting, including by mail.
My property taxes pay for the things that touch my life most. My parks. My schools. My Health Department. Breastfeed Durham. Property taxes make up nearly 60% of Durham County's general fund, and the county is one of the partners that funds our work. Supporters of the property tax amendment say limits would make tax bills more predictable. In April, the Durham County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to oppose it.
The future of funded, community-based projects like Breastfeed Durham depends on the decisions we make on November 3. Read up, then vote.
