The Durham Digest
Breastfeed Durham
June 2024

As the days get longer and the cicadas finally start to quiet, our year is heating up with exciting events and celebrations. This June, we are thrilled to honor Pride Month, Father's Day, and Juneteenth with our Breastfeed Durham community. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined us at the Queer Family Planning Health Fair. Your presence and support are invaluable as we strive for inclusivity and equity in all aspects of family care. Happy Pride Month, Father's Day, and Juneteenth to all!

We invite you to take part in advocating for breastfeeding-friendly childcare by filling out the Breastfeeding Friendly Childcare Survey. We are excited to celebrate the 39 childcare providers who have already completed the survey. Thank you for your growing awareness and commitment to supporting human milk feeding families.

As we mark the completion of the ICO4MCH funding year, we also want to express our sincere appreciation to the Durham County Department of Public Health for their invaluable support and funding through the ICO4MCH grant. Their commitment has been instrumental in our efforts to advance maternal and child health initiatives within our community

We're thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements within our community! Join us in extending our warmest congratulations to Kimberly Glover on achieving her MPH, Nicola Young completing the MRT-TI program, and Isaiah Palmer, the son of our Executive Director Bernadette, on his high school graduation.

Looking ahead, as we approach National Breastfeeding Month, we encourage you to share with us your plans for celebrating and supporting human milk feeding families.

Lastly, Breastfeed Durham will be closed June 19 - July 4 for our annual time of rest and revitalization. Supporting human milk feeding families can be emotionally and physically demanding. We close annually to ensure our volunteers and staff have the opportunity to rest, practice self-care, and rejuvenate their minds, bodies, and spirits.

Educational institutions must now accommodate the needs of all lactating students
To help education institutions, lactation support providers, and advocates understand what the new protections mean for lactating students, the USBC-affiliated Workplace Support Constellation is hosting the “New Rights for Lactating Students: Supporting Lactating Students Under Title IX” webinar on Wednesday, June 26, from 12-1 p.m. ET.

The U.S. Department of Education updated the agency's regulations interpreting Title IX of the Education Amendments Act, the federal law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in educational programs. The regulations clarify and expand protections for pregnant and parenting students and will go into effect on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

Join the US Breastfeeding Committee for a look at what the new Title IX protections mean for lactation. The webinar will offer an overview of the new legal obligations as well as practical solutions for educational institutions looking to add lactation spaces and other supports for their employees and students. The presentation will also offer ideas for how lactation support providers, advocates, and organizations can help bolster efforts in the educational setting.
