The Durham Digest (July 2021) |
| |
Summer is here and Breastfeed Durham continues to engage Durham in a community-wide program to impact health equity, as supported by the World Health Organization guidelines to work with communities to improve breastfeeding support services. We’re working hard to make Durham a better and more welcoming place for breastfeeding families.
This summer, we are focusing on gaps in care, supporting business/employees, and World Breastfeeding Week/National Breastfeeding Month. In June we met with community members to talk about gaps in care for LGBTQ+ human milk-feeding families. We are learning to think about more than milk and think about the whole family, and also to think about the needs of the family as the kids get bigger. Members of our Black Maternal Health community are working on a project (sharing wish lists for people to use to donate items). We’re working to get 38 businesses certified as breastfeeding-friendly. With the help of Monuts, J Lights Market & Cafe, Empower Therapy PLLC, Semaphore Marketing, and all the breastfeeding-friendly Durham businesses, we’re over halfway there! If you know of a business that would like to apply, please have them fill out this form. World Breastfeeding Week/National Breastfeeding Month is in August, which is coming up soon. If you’re holding any events, or know of any breastfeeding events in August, please let us know so we can help and support you. |
