The Durham Digest
Breastfeed Durham
October 2023

Duke Regional Hospital achieved a remarkable milestone in receiving the prestigious Baby-Friendly® Designation this summer! We are particularly impressed with Duke Regional’s commitment to addressing health disparities, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The correlation between breastfeeding and breast cancer prevention is significant and we commend their efforts to combat health disparities for women and decrease breast cancer mortality rates.

Continued efforts to close the gap in breast cancer mortality rates among different racial groups is critical. Studies show that the risk of breast cancer is reduced by 4.3% for every 12 months of breastfeeding, in addition to the 7% decrease in risk observed for each birth. Duke Regional Hospital's commitment to the Baby-Friendly® initiative is a vital step towards achieving health equity, and we are so grateful for their commitment! We are eager to learn about their plans to pursue designation across all the birthing hospitals within the Duke system.
