Upcoming WIC benefit changes

As of October 1, 2023 the North Carolina state WIC contract for standard infant human milk substitute will be transitioning to Abbot Similac products.

The following Gerber formula products will no longer be available through WIC program benefits (regardless of if a formula prescription is provided).

  • Gerber Good Start Gentle
  • Gerber Good Start Soothe
  • Gerber Soy

The following Abbott Similac products will replace the standard Gerber infant formula products, and will be available to WIC participants, based on infant feeding preference and intake assessment for all food benefits dated on or after October 1, 2023:

  • Similac Advance Concentrate
  • Similac Advance Powder
  • Similac Advance Ready-to-Feed (***)
  • Similac Sensitive Powder
  • Similac Sensitive Ready-to-Feed (***)
  • Similac Soy Isomil Concentrate
  • Similac Soy Isomil Powder
  • Similac Soy Isomil Ready-to-Feed (***)
  • Similac Total Comfort Powder

***For participants with documented inability to use concentrate/powdered formula products – inability to properly mix formula to appropriate dilution, lack of access to safe water, inadequate inventory of concentrate/powdered product

A provider human milk substitute prescription form is not required for this standard infant formula transition. WIC staff are working to update future infant food packages and inform WIC participants affected by this change.
