This Resource Library was assembled by the Tea and Milk Coalition, committed to meeting the needs of Asian Asian American, Native Hawaiian American, Pacific Island American, South East Asian American, Middle Eastern American, and refugees families with a focus on language equity.
The goal of the Tea and Milk Coalition is to become a group of passionate people who are dedicated to promoting and supporting breastfeeding in Durham’s Asian/Middle Eastern community. We believe that this work should be led by parents with lived experience. We work to recognize the unique cultural and educational needs of Asian and Middle Eastern American new parents. The Asian or Middle Eastern communities in the United States is often seen as a monolithic group, however, these populations comprise multiple ethnic groups that are culturally and linguistically distinct. Aggregating information and data on the “Asian” or “Middle Eastern” populations do a disservice to the members of the various communities, as their needs are often overlooked leaving them to experience inequitable outcomes, especially with infant feeding. It is essential that we as a coalition prioritize and highlight the needs of these smaller subgroups in order to improve their breastfeeding initiation and duration. This will require us to partner with local stakeholders to develop and implement culturally informed outreach and education programs.
As we continue to move towards bringing awareness to the diversity that exists within communities, we will progress toward more equitable actions for strengthening lactation support and education. We seeks to decrease inequities and normalize breastfeeding in Durham community by improving breastfeeding education and support practices, and by removing systemic barriers that prevent breastfeeding from flourishing.
