The Durham Digest
Breastfeed Durham
Final Weeks of August 2022

National Breastfeeding Month is a time of celebration, and we see so many powerful and beautiful images of nursing families and communities supporting them. In keeping with that celebration, Breastfeed Durham invites you to a FREE family photoshoot! We look forward to celebrating these wonderful images of families from our local community on our social media. And we invite you to join Breastfeed Durham as we celebrate success and share our stories at the virtual storytelling event at noon on August 23. Everyone is welcome to participate!

We are also looking for just one more volunteer to join our Executive Director, Bernadette Greene, as she meets with local businesses on August 26 and September 2 at 10 AM. We continue to be deeply concerned about our neighbors in Chatham County. You are welcomed to add your signature on the Letter of Solidarity.

Celebrate and Share Your Breastfeeding Story
Celebrate and Share Your Breastfeeding Story
Breastfeed Durham, Stephanie Amekuedi, Amber Crews, and Kala Hinnantand share our stories. Most stories can’t be told all in one go. Rather, they are built bit by bit, piece by piece – gaining meaning and depth though the unfolding. The same can be said for our chest/breastfeeding stories. While there may appear to be a clear start, is there ever really a clear end? The act of providing human milk to one’s child may cease, but the love and benefits of every drop remain. Let's take a few moments to endeavor to pass down a legacy, one that was handed and one that we hope will last for many generations to come – the legacy of breastfeeding.

Keep the Chatham Maternity Care Center (MCC) Open!
The Chatham Hospital Board of Trustees is meeting to discuss the potential and imminent closure of its Maternity Care Center, less than 2 years after it was opened. Don’t let our neighbor, Chatham County become a ‘maternity care desert’. Please add your name/credentials to the form as a signature on the Letter of Solidarity.  Please disseminate widely.

BBW 2022: 10 Years, A New Foundation
It is the 10th year of Black Breastfeeding Week and we’re just getting started. For #BBW22, we’re celebrating the countless stories and families- past, present & future. We’ve shifted the narrative/optics, supported and uplifted each other…and it’s still just the beginning. The new foundation of lactation support is built on racial equity, cultural empowerment, and community engagement and is powered by our collective resilience. #BBW10Years #blackbreastfeedingweek Please share and help spread the word. We look forward to celebrating with you!

Check out the top five reasons we need a Black Breastfeeding Week.

  1. The high black infant mortality rate
  2. High rates of diet-related disease
  3. Lack of diversity in lactation field
  4. Unique cultural barriers among black women
  5. Desert-Like Conditions in Our Communities
