It's Black Maternal Health Week!
Each year, we celebrate Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) between April 11-17 to build awareness, activism, and community-building to amplify the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people.
Last night, SisterSong hosted a lively pre-launch party in honor of Black Maternal Health Week, bringing together Durham's birthing community and birth workers to play games and support Equity Before Birth's fundraiser through a sliding scale admission fee. We engaged in birth trivia and other fun games, while also learning about the important work being done to improve birthing outcomes for Black folks across NC. Although the event has already taken place, families can still contribute to this vital cause by donating to Equity Before Birth's fundraiser.
This week, we still have many events to celebrate Black Maternal Health Week. We look forward to dancing with Equity Before Birth, ribbon cuttings with MAAME, and a free Breastfeed Durham hosted photoshoot for Black and Brown breastfeeding parents in honor of Black Maternal Health Week and National Minority Health Month. We also continue our First Food Equity Series to discuss how one's birth experience can impact breastfeeding initiation and duration with Tonya Daniel. |
