Breastfeed Durham
The Durham Digest
September 2021

This September is a time filled with both mourning and celebrations. This marks 20 years since the events of 9/11.  Followed by Hispanic Heritage month, September 15 to October 15. Keep an eye out for more details on the Breastfeed Durham webpage.

Shared Responsibility

After a month of thinking about the theme of National Breastfeeding Month 'A Shared Responsibility', Breastfeed Durham and some of our partner organizations in North Carolina want to humbly request that other advocacy groups in our area focus one meeting per year themed around First Food Race Equity. The first food race equity movement centers around the social structures that prevent the inherent right for families of color to provide human milk as first food, and openly works to identify the cases of inequities and health disparities arising from structural failures to provide adequate support in communities of color. Breastfeeding is a primary food justice concern and our most important first food. The goal would be  that first food race equity discussions would become part of the fabric of our community.  As we are assembling a list of organizations to approach, please send us your recommendations.
