Community advocates are warmly invited to come together for the first Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Lactation Support Coalition meeting on January 23, 2023 at 3:30 pm. This coalition will meet quarterly. Please share this information with your networks.
The goal of these meetings would be to have the larger community discuss gaps in care for Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander families and to review and improve printed and digital resources.
The Asian population in the United States is often seen as a monolithic group, however, this population comprises multiple ethnic groups that are culturally and linguistically distinct. Aggregating information and data on the “Asian” populations do a disservice to the members of the various communities, as their needs are often overlooked leaving them to experience inequitable outcomes, especially with infant feeding. It is essential that we as a coalition prioritize and highlight the needs of these smaller subgroups in order to improve their breastfeeding initiation and duration. This will require us to partner with local stakeholders to develop and implement culturally informed outreach and education programs. As we continue to move towards bringing awareness to the diversity that exists within the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities, we will progress toward more equitable actions for strengthening lactation support and education.
