Melanie from Emerald Doulas

Emerald Doulas’ Legacy and Community Support

Some news hits the heart of a community.

This week, we learned that Emerald Doulas, a beloved part of Durham’s maternal and infant health landscape for the past decade, will be closing their physical office at the end of May and dissolving their birth doula team by September. These changes come as the founder, Melanie, begins an unexpected and courageous health journey.

For ten years, the Emerald Doulas team has walked alongside families—through labor, loss, laughter, and those unforgettable early days of parenting. They have been fierce advocates, gentle guides, and a steady presence for so many. Their absence from Highgate Drive will be deeply felt by the many families who found safety, wisdom, and warmth within their walls.

Even as services shift, the heart of Emerald Doulas remains. Their postpartum support will continue, their team remains committed to care, and Melanie’s strength continues to light the way for her community.

At Breastfeed Durham, we extend our deepest gratitude to Melanie and the entire Emerald Doulas team for their decade of unwavering service. We are holding them close in our thoughts, and we know we are not alone.

For those who have been touched by their care, this is a moment to pause, reflect, and honor their legacy.
