Part-Time Bilingual (Spanish/English) Hybrid Community Health Worker at Durham County Department of Public Health

Public Health Nurse Specialist in Durham County

Durham County is seeking a Public Health Nurse Specialist with an RN IBCLC certification! While Breastfeed Durham typically advocates for IBCLC credentialed roles to focus solely on lactation, this position is distinct in its broader scope. The role includes substantial responsibilities across multiple areas of public health, meaning you’d be supporting both lactating families and also a wide range of community members in various health contexts. We are especially warmly, inviting candidates from the BIPOC community and/or with bilingual capabilities to help us meet the diverse needs of families in Durham.

This employee will function as a Registered Nurse in the Women’s Health Program (WHP) at Durham County Department of Public Health (DCoDPH). The WHP is comprised of the Family Planning (FP) and Maternal Health (MH) Clinics. This position functions as a Public Health Nurse Specialist (PHNS) in the MH clinic at DCoDPH, with a focus on lactation education and counseling to patients of the WHP. The PHNS provides obstetrical/maternal health services, works closely with DCoDPH staff in the Division of Health Education on breastfeeding-related efforts, and coordinates the use of a public lactation room within the facility.

Bilingual (Spanish-English) Home Visiting Breastfeeding Peer-Counselors and IBCLCs in Greensboro

Dr. Aunchalee E.L. Palmquist, PhD, MA, IBCLC, Associate Professor of the Practice of Global Health and Cultural Anthropology and Director of Graduate Studies at Duke Global Health Institute is looking to hire two bilingual home visiting breastfeeding peer-counselors from the Greensboro area who identify with Spanish-speaking immigrant and refugee families. This is part of a new NIH-funded study/intervention trial for a home visiting peer-counseling model designed for Spanish-speaking immigrant and refugee families in the Greensboro area. The aim is to increase exclusive breastfeeding and reduce infants’ risk factors for child overweight and metabolic disorders.

The study team is recruiting and hiring two bi-lingual women from within these communities to become home visiting breastfeeding peer-counselors. They will pay the course fee for the peer counselors to train through Alimentación Segura Infantil’s online peer counseling training program (in Spanish). This training will be supplemented with in-person mentorship and opportunities to gain practice experience here in NC. They will also offer peer counselors a salary with this part-time (~20h per week) position. If you are someone who has breastfed a baby, is Latine, bilingual, passionate about MCH, and would like to gain training as a peer-counselor through our study, please reach out to Dr. Aunchalee Palmquist (a.palmquist@duke.edu).

The study team is also putting together a roster of bilingual (Spanish-English) IBCLCs who we can refer families to when issues arise and they need more specialized care. Lincoln Community Health Center, Inc., a federally qualified community health center located in Durham, NC is recruiting for a WIC Program Director. This position is responsible for managing a large multi-faceted nutrition program in a community health center. The WIC Program Director plans nutritional program activities to correspond with services provided and administered by the WIC Program. The position is responsible for program planning and budgeting as well as service delivery functions, clinician contact and coordination, problem solving policy development nd modification, and training. The position is administrative with little involvement in direct client services. Work may include other related duties as determined by management. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The WIC Program Director must have an advanced knowledge and skill in comprehensive nutrition assessment and care planning, including problem diagnosis, counseling, and evaluation of clients from diverse backgrounds and ages. Excellent management and supervisory skills, and the ability to manage diverse staff are required. Demonstrated ability in staff development to include motivation techniques, staff accountability, performance expectations and correction.  The ability to plan, develop, direct and evaluate Team Members. The ability to research nutritional information, identify trends, and apply to service delivery as appropriate is required. A general knowledge of community, resources, and socio-economic dynamics to provide outreach activities is required. The position requires excellent interviewing, counseling, and dietary assessment skills. Ability to plan, develop, direct, and evaluate a nutrition program and staff is required. The Program Director is responsible for training and supervising staff, students and interns. The ability to establish rapport with agencies and groups within the community and communicate effectively with diverse populations is required. Needs to be comfortable receiving and carrying out directions from a multi-tiered agency system including Nutrition Services Branch and Food and Nutrition Services.  Ability to participate as a contributing member of the organization’s leadership team is required.

EDUCATION

The Nutritionist II will require a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetics Registration; or Master’s degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, or Nutrition; or graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics and two years nutrition experience; or Dietetic Technician, registered with the Commission on Dietetics Registration with a Bachelor’s degree in any subject area from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience; or a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Community Nutrition from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience.  The Nutritionist III requires Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education with a Master’s degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Nutrition from an accredited college or university and one year experience; or Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education and two years nutrition experience.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor/Processing Assistant at Lincoln Community Health Center, Inc.

Lincoln Community Health Center, Inc., a federally qualified community health center located in Durham, NC is recruiting for a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor/Processing Assistant. The Peer Counselor will provide basic breastfeeding information, encouragement and support to WIC participants and perform within the Peer Counselor Scope of Practice while following the WIC Program policies and procedures. The Peer Counselor will teach basic, evidence-based techniques that help ensure a successful start in breastfeeding, work within the policies and procedures of the WIC Program, maintain records according to legal requirements and ethical practices. The Peer Counselor must participate in trainings required by the North Carolina Community Nutrition Services Section. This position is also responsible for issuing eWIC cards to clients, providing low-risk nutrition education and information on accessing benefits from local eWIC vendors, taking anthropometric measurements and performing blood collection (Hemoglobin) following WIC Program federal and state guidelines.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must be a mother who is currently breastfeeding or has breastfed.  Possess similar sociocultural background as the women they support.  Have the ability to communicate effectively and courteously with clients and co-workers and provide courteous and respectful customer service. Have the ability to interpret changes in rules and regulations pertaining to the WIC Program and to pay attention to details as well as be able to multi-task.  Ability to work face-to-face and by telephone with a culturally diverse, high-risk population of low income pregnant and breastfeeding women and young infants.  Computer skills required.  Be competent in carrying out directions from a multi-tiered agency system, including Nutrition Services Branch.

Graduation from high school or equivalent with one (1) year of general clerical/computer experience.  Additional clerical and mathematical courses preferred.  Must be a paraprofessional.

The WIC Assistant Manager will help support a team of WIC Nutritionist, Administrative Assistants and Breastfeeding Peer Counselors, who collectively serve as the primary source of nutrition and lactation support to a vibrant and diverse local community.  The WIC Assistant Manager is accountable for the day-to-day administrative operations of the Piedmont Health Services (PHS) WIC Program, including staff scheduling, timesheet & payroll approvals, and inventory management. They perform a variety of responsible tasks that include providing programmatic, policy-related and technical assistance to the WIC staff.  Ensures program quality control that aligns with the standards, policies and mission of PHS, as well as the national and state WIC agencies. Provides supervision and direct support to Lead Nutritionists and float staff. Assesses the training needs of the team and provides appropriate training opportunities. Involved in hiring, evaluation, auditing and performance improvement plans within the department. Provides direct patient care as a nutritionist in WIC clinics routinely.

If licensed as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), they will also provide direct care to breastfeeding mothers and babies in the WIC and medical clinics, as well as during home or hospital visits when needed. Will function as a WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE) and provide complimentary support for the Peer Counselor team if they are working with families who have complex lactation issues that are outside their scope of practice. An IBCLC in this role will also work with other lactation staff to provide clinical precepting opportunities to lactation students in partnership with NC academic institutions who offer lactation training programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Nutrition, Public Health, other Health related degree program
  • Current/valid License: Registered Dietitian (RD) by The Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR) and licensed as a Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) by the North Carolina Board of Dietetics and Nutrition, licensure as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), or completion of all coursework/internship and exam eligible for RD or IBCLC.

Breastfeeding Community Educator at Franklin County Health Department

The Franklin County Health Department is seeking a passionate and dedicated Breastfeeding Community Educator to join their team. This is a grant-funded position with funding through May of 2026, with the possibility of extension. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide support and education to new mothers on breastfeeding and related topics. This is a temporary – 2 year position, 30 hours a week, $22/hour wage.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Provide comprehensive one-on-one counseling sessions to new mothers, addressing breastfeeding techniques, latch issues, and concerns, ensuring
    personalized support tailored to each individual’s needs
  • Implement and regularly update educational materials and programs on breastfeeding, including workshops, seminars, and informational sessions for both expectant and new mothers.
  • Collaborate closely with healthcare providers within the department to ensure a seamless continuum of care for new mothers, facilitating referrals and follow-ups as necessary.
  • Maintain a case load of clients, tracking progress, providing ongoing support, and adjusting counseling strategies as needed to achieve optimal breastfeeding outcomes.
  • Facilitate and oversee a lactation and breastfeeding support group on behalf of the program, creating a safe and supportive environment for participants to share experiences, seek guidance, and foster community connections.
  • Conduct outreach efforts to promote breastfeeding awareness and participation in program services, including networking with local healthcare providers, community organizations, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Comfortably teach large groups of people using an established evidence-based curriculum, demonstrating effective communication skills, empathy, and a passion for maternal and child health.

Qualifications and Preferred Skills

  • Graduation from high school or GED; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Strong understanding of breastfeeding best practices and techniques, proven experience as a breastfeeding peer counselor or lactation consultant would be a plus.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport, provide empathetic support, and effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment, exhibiting flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to shared goals.
  • Enthusiasm for promoting breastfeeding as a vital component of maternal and child health, coupled with a compassionate and non-judgmental approach to supporting mothers through their breastfeeding journey.
  • Reliable transportation for travel to various community locations and events as needed.
  • Proficiency in public speaking and written communication in English; additional language skills are a plus.
  • Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is advantageous but not required.
  • Personal breastfeeding experience would be an asset, providing valuable insights and empathy in supporting breastfeeding mothers.

LGBTQ Center of Durham: Food Pantry Administrator

The LGBTQ Center of Durham is seeking a part-time employee to help administer our budding Food Pantry. The Administrator for the Food Pantry at the LGBTQ Center of Durham will assist the Operations Manager in stocking, distributing and keeping records for the Food Pantry and its clients. This includes providing essential knowledge from a client perspective in program development. To be successful as the Administrator for the Food Pantry, you should be committed to helping QTBIPOC and other food insecure clients meet immediate needs for nutritious food which they can safely store and prepare. Will function as a WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE) and provide complimentary support for the Peer Counselor team if they are working with families who have complex lactation issues that are outside their scope of practice. WIC Nutritionist/Lactation Consultant

Housed within one of the largest Federally Qualified Health Center organizations in North Carolina, the Piedmont Health Services WIC Program supports a large perinatal and pediatric population in Chatham and Orange Counties. As a licensed International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), the WIC Nutritionist/Lactation Consultant will provide part-time inpatient clinical lactation support and onsite WIC services in partnership with UNC Chatham Hospital, in their small, rural Maternity Care Center. This contracted partnership role is also an integral part of the Chatham Hospital team working towards Baby Friendly hospital designation status, with support from ENRICH Carolinas and EMPower Best Practices Training Initiatives. The WIC Nutritionist/Lactation Consultant is responsible for performing a variety of tasks involving program eligibility, determination of nutrition risk through comprehensive nutrition assessments, food package prescriptions, and culturally concordant counseling of WIC participants in nutrition principals, diet, food selection, and lactation. Provides WIC & lactation support services as part of a cross-departmental interdisciplinary healthcare team within the various PHS Community Health Center sites. Builds and maintains relationships with PHS clinic and organizational leadership, as well as partnering community aid organizations to support the broad health and socio/economic needs of WIC participant population, the WIC Program and the greater PHS organization

  • Current/valid License: IBCLC (required)
  • Experience:  One year of public health experience or similar preferred.
  • Intermediate Spanish language skills preferred.
