There’s big news coming our way – and if you’re a breastfeeding mama or advocate, you’re going to want to hear this. After many discussions and deliberations, the state legislature has finally given us something to cheer about: sales tax on breast pumps and related equipment will be no more! That’s right – amidst the 625-page budget agreement revealed on Wednesday, this little gem sparkles brightly for us.
Here’s a bit of a backdrop on the state budget scene:
The budget covers a lot of ground – from a 4% raise for many of our state employees this year and another 3% bump the next, to a gradual reduction in the personal income tax rate. Senate leader Phil Berger emphasized the budget’s consideration of past achievements, current requirements, and available financial resources, noting its commitment to enhancing infrastructure in rural North Carolina and prioritizing student results.
However, not everyone’s on board. Some, like Rep. Deb Butler, have expressed concerns over the speed with which such a comprehensive bill has been presented. With “little time to cover a $30 billion budget and 600 pages,” she mentioned, there are aspects of the budget that have raised eyebrows. Among these concerns are potential shortfalls from tax cuts, with Rep. Butler particularly pointing out topics like the expansion of private school vouchers without income prerequisites.
But, amidst the sea of policy provisions and potential concerns, let’s refocus on our headline news. Breast pumps are getting more affordable!
Why is this a big deal? Because every financial barrier removed is a step closer to supporting breastfeeding mothers and ensuring that every baby gets the healthiest start to life. We believe in the invaluable benefits of breastfeeding, and this move acknowledges the necessity of such tools in facilitating the process.
To our dear community, we understand that policy decisions and budget agreements can be intricate and multi-layered. But for today, let’s celebrate this victory for all breastfeeding families. By making breast pumps more accessible, we’re embracing a future where every mother feels empowered and every baby is nourished.
We at Breastfeed Durham are celebrating the promise of a healthier tomorrow and the policies that make it possible!
