Breastfeed Durham hosted a discussion on Gaps in Care for Lactating Families in Durham, presented by Maya Jackson, founder and Executive Director of Mobilizing African American Mothers through Empowerment (MAAME, Inc.), as part of our First Food Equity Webinar Series on February 14, 2023. Breastfeed Durham’s First Food Equity Webinar Series is committed to promoting equity in lactation support and advocating for policies and practices that benefit all families. We believe that everyone deserves access to the resources they need to nourish their infants and themselves.

Watch and engage with this important discussion on Gaps in Care for Lactating Families in Durham and be part of the solution to promote equity in lactation support. During the webinar, Maya shared her solutions for closing gaps in lactation support and discussed important topics like the intersection of prenatal care and breastfeeding and the impact of birth experiences on breastfeeding. Providers and community advocates were invited to engage in this important conversation and learn how they can support lactating families in Durham.

Here are some of the questions and topics that Maya dives deeper into:
– What does First Food Equity mean to you?
– Share the solutions that you brought to your community (ex. forming MAAME).
– Fully recognizing the IBCLC credential as a standalone credential (without the RN).
– How do you feel that prenatal care intersects with breastfeeding?
– How does one’s birth experience intersect with breastfeeding?
