We need your help right now! We are calling on the Senate to pass the PUMP Act and close the coverage gap in the Break Time for Nursing Mothers law. The bill was passed by the House last year, and now we need the Senate to do their part.
To make it happen, we need to send a tidal wave of calls to the U.S. Senate over the next few weeks. Thankfully, the MomsRising call line makes it easy!
Simply text PUMP to 747464. You will be prompted to enter your zip code and then will be connected to your Senator’s office. Once you’re connected, just read from the call script below:
Hello, my name is [________]. I live in [city, state, zip code] and am a constituent of Senator [name]. I am calling to urge the Senator to support Senate Bill 1658, the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act. This bill will cover 9 million women of childbearing age who are left out of the Break Time for Nursing Mothers law. Passage of the PUMP Act would make a world of difference for families and I hope you will join as a cosponsor.
[Add your own words about why this bill is important and why your Senator should support it. Share your own story.]
Nervous about making the call? We’re here to support you! Read this blog describing exactly what you can expect.
The Break Time for Nursing Mothers law, passed in 2010, provides critical protections to ensure that employees have reasonable break time and a private place to pump during the work day. However, nearly one in four women of childbearing age are excluded from coverage and have no clear right to break time and a private space to pump.
It’s time to close the gap! The PUMP Act would:
- Ensure that ALL lactating employees are covered by the Break Time law.
- Ensure that nursing mothers have access to remedies that are available for other violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Together, we can make a difference, thank you for raising your voice.
