Community Generosity Launches Breastfeed Durham’s Lactation Collaborative

At Breastfeed Durham, we believe that every dollar is a vote for what matters most in our community. This month, our community cast a decisive vote for families: thanks to an anonymous donor, we are thrilled to announce the launch of the Lactation Collaborative.

This generous gift secures the Collaborative for the next year, allowing us to expand direct services for uninsured and underinsured families, support lactating parents through home visits and weekend clinics, and provide culturally responsive care led by Black and Spanish-speaking IBCLCs.

We know many of you may have wondered: how can we launch something new at the same time that we’ve been candid about running low on funding? The answer is simple—we put our priorities where the money is. When donors step forward, we honor their wishes and invest in the programs they want to see thrive. In this case, the Lactation Collaborative rose to the top.

This new investment is about people. Families in Durham will now have access to more equitable, compassionate, and timely lactation support. And for our team, it’s a reminder that even in tough seasons, community generosity can spark new possibilities.

That said, our work isn’t finished. While the Lactation Collaborative is now funded for the year, we remain $12,000 short of securing funding for Bernadette’s position. Bernadette is our tireless Community Advocate who works evenings and weekends to meet families where they are. Ensuring her role is sustained is critical to keeping our promise to Durham families.

If you’re inspired by this story and want to help us close the gap, please consider making a donation today. Every contribution, large or small, brings us closer to a future where every family in Durham can feed their babies with dignity, support, and success.
