By the Breastfeed Durham Team, with Linels Higuera Ancidey and Nikki Bronson
On Friday, August 21, the moms of Un Día a la Vez, Breastfeed Durham’s Spanish-language perinatal support circle, had unusual guests: four firefighters from the Durham Fire Department, one of them fully bilingual, who led the whole session in Spanish.
They covered the things nobody teaches you before you bring a baby home. How a fire extinguisher actually works. How to put out a grease fire. How the fire department will come to your house, check your smoke detectors, and do a safety assessment. And how to help small children trust firefighters, gear and all, so they run toward help instead of away from it.

“I learned a lot from the moms that were there and from the fire department,” said Nikki Bronson, who joined the circle that day. “Now I know how to put out a grease fire!”
Then, as the room was emptying out, the fire truck pulled up.
“It was a really, really good session,” said Linels Higuera Ancidey, IBCLC, who co-founded Un Día a la Vez. “They are really excited about continuing collaboration.”
So are we, and we hope to see the Durham Fire Department at our next Family Festival.

The session was one of the last at the circle’s first home. For more than two years, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church hosted Un Día a la Vez in the Santa Clara trailer, and we are grateful. This fall the circle moves to Duke Family Medicine, where Linels has joined the team, and will continue every other Friday. [First Duke Family Medicine date and how families should RSVP.]
Un Día a la Vez is free and open to pregnant and postpartum Spanish-speaking families in Durham. Learn more: https://breastfeeddurham.org/spanish-speaking-families/ [This page only mentions the Instagram handle @undiaalaveznc
