Improving Community Outcomes for Maternal and Child Health

I’m excited to announce there’s a new collaboration happening… ICO4MCH is collaborating with Welcome Baby to expand access to breastfeeding support in Durham County. Welcome Baby, a program of Durham County Cooperative Extension, funded by Durham County Government and Durham’s Partnership for Children aims to strengthen families with young children by providing accurate child development information and emotional and practical support.

Last month, I was invited to attend Welcome Baby’s 3rd Annual Fall Pop Up Shop where I connected with Durham County families, distributing breastfeeding supplies including milk pads, breast pumps, and milk storage bags in addition to informing them of resources and services available through Durham County Department of Public Health.

It was there that I met Karen Rodriguez! Karen, a Community Services Consultant with Welcome Baby facilitates monthly breastfeeding support classes in both English and Spanish, offering a FREE non-judgmental environment for families to share their breastfeeding experiences, challenges, and overall stories.

While discussing the strengths and weaknesses of breastfeeding efforts around the county, we discovered our strengths were their weaknesses and vice versa. It was then we decided to speak with our management about collaborating our efforts to expand accessibility to breastfeeding support in Durham County.

Be on the lookout for information regarding our Winter Wonderland Breastfeeding Support Group December 13th in English and December 14th in Spanish!

We hope to see you there!
