Last month, Patients for Patient Safety US, a patient-led organization dedicated to safe, equitable care, invited our Executive Director, Bernadette Greene, and Breastfeed Durham to participate in patient safety and equity workshop in San Diego, where leaders and advocates gathered to discuss pressing concerns and innovative solutions in healthcare. This event served as a pivotal moment for reshaping strategies around patient safety and equitable care.
PFPS US has many patient safety and diagnostic excellence projects including Project PIVOT which is bringing patients and family members together to rethink how patients and others can reshape safe, equitable care in the US by learning directly from patient-reported experiences and outcomes that matter to patients – data that does not get captured using traditional approaches.
Key Takeaways from the Workshop:
1. Addressing Health Disparities: The workshop emphasized the importance of recognizing and addressing systemic inequities in healthcare. Patient Safety and Equity involves developing targeted interventions that ensure patient safety is prioritized across diverse populations.
2. Strengthening Patient Advocacy: One recurring theme was the need for stronger patient advocacy frameworks. It’s important to focus on empowering patients and caregivers with resources to navigate healthcare challenges more effectively.
3. Enhancing Communication and Training: Miscommunication and lack of standardized training were identified as critical barriers to patient safety. It is critical to support initiatives that improve communication between providers and patients, as well as promote equity-driven education for healthcare professionals.
4. Data-Driven Decision-Making: The use of data to track disparities and patient outcomes will be a cornerstone of our revised approach. By leveraging real-time insights, we can better address gaps in care and promote accountability in the healthcare system.
Project Pivot represents an exciting opportunity to amplify our impact and contribute to a healthcare landscape that prioritizes both safety and equity.
